I’m always searching for methods to save money. Saving money means saying goodbye to morning Starbucks runs. But, such early outings are no longer practical for my lifestyle since I would have to go out of my way to get to one.

To be honest, the money I’ve spent on Starbucks with my gold card over the previous five years has virtually completely come from gift cards given to me for Christmas and birthdays.

But, sadly, the funds have gone out. Sniff, sniff, sniff. Instead of being disappointed, I’ve decided to focus on the positives and make an effort to make my own Starbucks drinks and treats at home.

Why making your own coffee is better than going to Starbucks

  • You save money on your coffee in the morning.
  • You know precisely what’s in your drink.
  • If you commute to a Starbucks, you will save time by not driving. If you must walk,
  • You don’t have somebody bringing you a cup with your name scrawled wildly and hilariously incorrectly on it.
  • It also allows you to experiment with different coffee recipes!

My usual Starbucks coffee drink order was a Venti Skinny Vanilla Latte, but every now and then I have a terrible white chocolate desire and spend on the additional calories contained in their White Chocolate Mocha.

It’s creamy, white chocolate-y, and just fantastic. It’s a treat, and not something I’d get on a regular basis.

To be honest, I nearly regard it as my day’s dessert rather than my coffee. The whipped cream is what truly makes it for me.

How to make white chocolate mocha

You will require:

  • A mug (duh) (duh)
  • 8 ounces of your preferred milk (cashew milk works well as a substitution for dairy milk!)
  • 2 espresso shots
  • Torani White Chocolate Sauce, 2 tbsp (aff link)
  • Whipping cream (optional, but encouraged for true indulgence)

You’ll also need a technique to combine the milk and white chocolate sauce. We have an espresso machine (affiliate link) for which I can use the steam wand, but you can also use a little milk frothing wand (affiliate link) or an electric milk frother (affiliate link), whichever works best for you. To begin, choose one of the techniques listed below:

Making it in a small saucepan

Heat the milk and white chocolate sauce over low heat, whisking periodically, until bubbles form along the top of the liquid.

Making it with a milk frother

Heat the milk and white chocolate sauce according to the directions on the frother.

Make it using an espresso machine steam wand

Heat the milk in the milk pitcher that comes with your espresso machine (aff link) using the steam wand until the cup is warm to the touch (test with the palm of your hand). Whisk in the white chocolate sauce until combined.

Brew your espresso

From here, prepare your espresso as desired, pour the milk mixture into your cup, and then pour in your brewed espresso.

If desired, top with whipped cream and drizzle with more white chocolate sauce.

If you’re looking for an espresso machine, we’ve used a BrevilleBarista Pro for years and love it.

What kind of milk should I use in a white chocolate mocha?

Personally, I like the flavor of cashew milk and how it compliments the white chocolate. But, you may use whatever dairy or nondairy milk you like.

Whole milk, 2% milk, almond milk, oat milk, macadamia milk, and hemp milk are other alternatives. To be honest, I enjoy pretty much anything Elmhurst 1925 makes.

I don’t indulge myself to this very frequently, but when I do, I enjoy the Torani White Chocolate Sauce (aff link), which is rich and tasty!

Since it is so concentrated, you don’t need to use much, which is always a good thing because the bottle lasts a long time.

I will tell you that it is incredibly tempting to just squeeze the bottle into your mouth. Do your hardest not to do that.

How to make the white chocolate mocha sauce

You may create your own Torani white chocolate syrup if you don’t have any on hand. Try this recipe for homemade white chocolate sauce. You’ll need chopped white chocolate (not white chocolate chips), cream, and unsalted butter.

It just takes me 5 minutes to put this together, and I feel fairly good about the time and money I save by doing it myself.

Give it a try (pun intended), and then experiment with various tastes to make it your own!

About those calories…

The dish I came up with has less calories, not by much, but I’ll take it! Clearly, it will vary depending on the kind of milk used, the quantity of whipped cream used, and whether or not you add extra white chocolate sauce as a topping.

In any case, it will have less calories and cost less than the Starbucks version!

And I’ll forgive you if you skip the whipped cream and white chocolate drizzle.

How to make your own whipped cream

We don’t always have whipped cream on hand since I like to make my own. My favorite is mascarpone whipped cream, but you can create your own with this easy recipe:

  • 2 cup heavy cream (cold) or heavy whipping cream 1
  • 1 teaspoon confectioners’ or granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  1. Whip the heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla extract with a hand mixer on medium-high speed until medium peaks form.
  2. Put to a piping bag or spoon on top of your beverages. Refrigerate the remainder in an airtight jar for up to 24 hours.
