Spaghetti Chips in the Air Fryer (Viral TikTok Recipe)

I’m putting the viral TikTok air fryer spaghetti chips recipe I’ve seen all over the internet to the test! They are claimed to be crispy, seasoned alternatives to potato chips made with basic ingredients and an air fryer, according to the TikTok community. See how they performed for me and if they lived up to the expectations!

I had avoided cooking any of the culinary fads that had gone popular on TikTok in the two years since I joined the app, but I eventually gave in when I heard about these air fryer pasta chips.

That seems like a very simple method to produce a healthy alternative to potato chips, and, well, I want to be cool like the cool kids on the internet.

So let’s look at the components, the procedure, and if I think this viral hit is worth the hype!

Air Fryer Pasta Chip Ingredients

  • Pasta: For testing reasons, I used a mix of farfalle and rigatoni.
  • After cooking, coat the pasta with olive oil.
  • To coat the cooked spaghetti, use freshly grated Parmesan cheese.
  • To coat the cooked spaghetti with Italian seasoning. Don’t have any Italian seasoning? Make your own by following the directions below!
  • Garlic powder adds taste to cooked pasta.
  • Salt: add salt to the pasta water and salt to the cooked pasta.

What’s the best shape pasta for pasta chips?

The spaghetti should be robust and big enough that you can pick it up and dip it like a potato chip.

For my testing, I used rigatoni and farfalle (bowtie pasta), but I believe you could also use ziti, rotini, or penne.

Whole wheat and gluten-free pasta might also work.

How to make your own Italian seasoning

If you don’t have Italian seasoning, just mix the following ingredients in a small dish and measure out 1 teaspoon for this recipe. Save the remainder in an airtight container.

  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon pepper flakes

How to make air fryer pasta chips

  1. Cook the pasta according to package directions, until al dente or little beyond al dente. Drain. There’s no need to rinse or coat with oil since we’ll take care of that in the following phase.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add cooked pasta, olive oil, parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and salt. Stir with wooden spoons until evenly covered.
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. To prevent spaghetti from sticking, spray the air fryer basket with nonstick spray. Spray the tops of the seasoned pasta again and place it in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  2. Air fried the pasta for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until golden brown and crisp. You may need to perform this in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  3. Remove from the air fryer with care and serve with your favorite dipping sauce. Serve and have fun!

Serving options

According to my study, the majority of consumers used marinara sauce as a dip. Nevertheless, as you can see from my mozzarella sticks recipe, it is a great option.

Here are some more dipping sauce suggestions:

  • Dip in beer cheese
  • Ranchdip
  • Hummus
  • Dip with sour cream and onions

Can you make pasta chips without an air fryer?

Sure thing! Bake the pasta chips on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

The oven-baked version will not be as crisp as the air fryer variant.

Observations and tips

  • Spraying my air fryer basket before and after adding the seasoned pasta resulted in no sticking when tossed halfway through, as well as a richer golden brown hue at the end.
  • For a little additional flavor, I added another sprinkling of Italian spice and grated Parmesan cheese after placing the pasta in the air fryer basket.
  • The use of onion powder, cayenne pepper powder, and paprika increased the heat and taste.
  • I found that combining several types of pasta in the same batch made it difficult to get consistent results, so I suggest separating them throughout the air frying process.

Rating This Viral TikTok Recipe

10. The blend of herbs, spices, and cheese is tasty, and a few extras like onion powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper helped to round out the taste. 7 FLAVOR

10. The feel of them did not appeal to me. I cooked many batches with various types of pasta and degrees of crispiness to see if I was doing anything wrong. These seemed to be either not crispy enough and tough to chew, but with nice flavor, or crunchy but tasted like somewhat burned pasta. 3 TEXTURE

PROS: Not too difficult to create, and you may customize the taste profile to your liking. I noticed some folks sweeten it with cinnamon and sugar, but I didn’t try it myself.

CONS: If you have a smaller air fryer basket, you will need to do them in batches, which will take some time. Additionally, this didn’t seem like a decent use of ingredients to me.

AVERAGE RATING: 5

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN? Extremely skeptic. That’s not to suggest other people won’t appreciate it, but I’d rather eat the cooked pasta with the marinara sauce and forgo the last frying step. Instead, get a bag of veggie chips. Yet, as with all foods, to each his or her own! I’m not here to make anyone’s yum taste bad.
