Part of my Baking Basicsseries: Don’t have the correct size muffin liners for those big pans, or didn’t notice you were out of normal cupcake liners until it was too late? You can simply manufacture your own muffin liners from parchment paper!
Tell me if you’ve ever been in this situation: you’re very thrilled to create some huge, bakery-style blueberry muffins, so you grab your ingredients and go to work!
After 15 minutes, your oven is preheated and your batter is ready to go, but when you open your box of different colored and sized muffin liners, you realize you are entirely out of giant muffin liners. [cries and collapses on the floor]
It’s not that serious, believe me. Sure, you could simply oil or spray the muffin pans with nonstick spray, but we’re talking about blueberry muffins, which means the fruit may be contacting the tin and still sticking to the edges and bottom.
I don’t know about you, but attempting to pull a blueberry muffin out of a baking pan only to end up with a plate full of muffin fragments isn’t my idea of a good time.
Thankfully, if you have some parchment paper on hand, you can quickly and simply DIY your own muffin liners to solve this issue. YAY!

How to make muffin liners
The technique is the same for both standard-sized and jumbo-sized muffins; the only difference is that the measurements and amounts alter.
2 inches in diameter). So you’ll need six 6 pieces of parchment paper for a large muffin tray that contains six muffins. For large muffin tins: Measure out 6 squares for each muffin cup (large muffin cups are normally 3 12 inch).
4 inches in diameter). So you’ll need twelve 5 pieces of parchment paper for a normal muffin tray that holds 12 muffins. Even better, get these pre-cut parchment squares and have them on hand at all times! For regular muffin tins: For each muffin cup, cut out around 5 pieces (normal muffin cups are generally 2 3).
Choose an item that will fit snugly into the base of each muffin cup. various of my drinking cups, as well as various canned products in my cupboard, work well for me.
Wrap the parchment square over your item to make the cup, adding creases around the bottom to fully sculpt it into the shape you require.
You may simply take it from the item and set it in your muffin tray, or, as I prefer, place it in the muffin tin with the object inside to weigh it down. I’ve discovered that by leaving them in this position until I’m ready to use them, they keep their shape a little better.
Voila! You have homemade tulip-style muffin cups.
Want cleaner-looking pleats?
If you want the pleats to be as symmetrical as possible, compress the paper against the item between the four corners of the parchment square with one hand while folding and pressing each corner with the other.
Can I use DIY muffin liners for cupcakes?
You certainly can. Making cupcake liners from parchment paper is the same procedure, however I suggest cutting the top edges of the parchment before applying frosting to your cupcakes.
Can I use bleached parchment paper?
Yep! I have unbleached parchment paper on hand, but bleached parchment paper can also work for handmade muffin liners.
The sole difference is that bleached parchment paper is white because it has been chlorine-treated, while unbleached parchment paper is untreated and brown in color.
Can I use wax paper instead?
Nope. Wax paper should not be used in the oven because the wax coating on the paper might melt or even catch fire!
Because its silicone coating is particularly designed to be heat resistant, parchment paper is safe to use in the oven.
I hope this was helpful! Is there anything more I should have spoken regarding this topic? Please let me know in the comments section below.
