It’s essential to have a fantastic, simple homemade Italian spice recipe on hand! This versatile combination of Italian spices is perfect for pasta recipes, snacks, flavoring vegetables, poultry, pig, and beef, and a variety of other applications. Because it’s so simple to mix and customize to your preferences, you’ll never want to buy a store-bought blend again!
I’ll be honest with you: I don’t believe I’ve ever purchased a jar of Italian spice mix in the grocery store.
It’s so simple to make at home that I’ve always simply made it on the go as required. Alternatively, I’ve prepared a bigger amount and kept it in an airtight jar in my spice drawer.
However, from what I’ve observed, store-bought mixes are all very much the same. I guess you can also purchase little sachets of Italian spice at various places.
Aside: Do you have a spice cabinet? Or how about a spice rack? Or maybe a spice cabinet? It took us a long time to select how to keep our spices, and although it’s not ideal, our spice cabinet has served us well!

Ingredients for Italian seasoning
Everyone who mixes their own Italian spice blend uses slightly different amounts of components, but this has always been my go-to that tastes (and smells!) fantastic in all my favorite recipes:
- tablespoondried basil
- tablespoondried thyme
- tablespoondried rosemary
- tablespoondried marjoram
- tablespoondried parsley
- 1tablespoonsdried oregano
- teaspoongarlic powder
- teaspoonred pepper flakes
In my view, you may experiment with the proportions as much as you like; the only guideline is that you must use dried herbs rather than fresh herbs.
How to make homemade Italian seasoning mix
Making your own mix, fortunately for all of us, couldn’t be simpler!
- Whisk together all ingredients in a small bowl, then keep in an airtight container in a cold, dark, and dry area.
- Alternatively, you could just mix everything in the container you want to keep it in and shake the hell out of it.
Either way super easy!
If you prefer a finer spice mix, pulse it a few times in a food processor or mortar and pestle to break down the bigger dry herbs.
How to store Italian seasoning
If you keep your spice mix in an airtight container in a dry, cold, and dark area, it should last around 2 years, just like any other dried herb spice blend.
However, like with everything, if it begins to taste strange or loses its power, it is time to replace it.
