A white Russian is a simple drink prepared of vodka, coffee liqueur (such as Kahlua), and cream that is served over ice in an old-fashioned glass without the use of a cocktail shaker. You don’t have to be The Dude to enjoy this decadent after-dinner beverage!
First and foremost, if you are still perplexed by my remark regarding The Dude above,
The Dude is a common nickname for Jeff Bridges’ character Jeffrey the Dude Lebowski in the cult classic film The Big Lebowski. To cut a long tale short, The Dude is a slacker who is fascinated with bowling and wears robes all the time.
I won’t be able to give the movie justice in a summary on this website, so if you haven’t watched it, I strongly advise you to do so. The Guy obeys.
Thus, people identify the drink with the character, which, apart from how unbelievably amazing white Russians are, is perhaps my favorite aspect of this beverage. And, how simple it is.

What does a White Russian taste like?
The closest way I can describe the taste of a White Russian is to compare it to an extremely creamy, luscious iced coffee with a kick.
If you prefer drinks like Irish Coffee and Espresso Martinis, I believe you’ll appreciate the White Russian.
White Russian ingredients
The White Russian cocktail recipe couldn’t be simpler:
- Vodka Don’t use the inexpensive things you got in college to make a big bowl of punch. Select one with a flavor you like since it is one of just three components and you will taste it. Absolut is a reliable and generally accessible option, but I also like Reyka, PAU Maui vodka, and anything I can get at local distilleries (shop small!).
- Espresso liqueur The most popular option for this is Kahlua, which is also the simplest to get. I also like Tia Maria and Mr. Black. If the resultant drink is too bitter for you owing to the coffee liqueur you used, add a small quantity of simple syrup.
- sour cream There’s nothing spectacular about this! Just plain old heavy cream. You may use milk or half & half instead, but the result will be thinner and less rich.
How to make White Russians
- Ice cubes should be placed in an old-fashioned glass.
- Pour in the vodka, followed by the coffee liqueur.
- Pour in the heavy cream and whisk to combine.
That’s all. You don’t even have to stir it if you don’t want to. It does look fantastic before stirring (see above).
What’s a Black Russian?
The Black Russian is much simpler than the White Russian! It is the forerunner of the White Russian, which has been overshadowed by the popularity of The Dude’s favorite drink.
Just leave off the cream to create a Black Russian. Two ounces vodka, one ounce coffee liqueur, in a rocks glass with ice.
Helpful tips
- All of your components should be chilled. If you’re not combining room temperature whiskey with cold heavy cream, this just assures that the ice melts more slowly and gives the cocktail a more uniform taste.
- Stir it or don’t stir it. If you want to maintain the beautiful swirls of cream, give it a brief stir before diving in! But, if you want to ensure that all of the ingredients are evenly combined, give it a couple more stirs until it is a warm beige color.
- Season with a pinch of cayenne pepper. For a little more taste, I prefer to top my White Russian with a sprinkling or dusting of nutmeg (or occasionally cinnamon). Warm spices, in my opinion, make an already comfy drink even cozier.
