How this recipe came to be
Not in the mood for a 2019 story? Feel free to skip ahead to the recipe at the end!
I’ve been attempting to shed a few pounds in preparation for our impending honeymoon, and I’ve started tracking calories. This is not my idea of a good time. Nevertheless, it works.
My favorite wine is one of the things that has fallen by the wayside. When I consider that a 5 ounce pour of Riesling has 120 calories, it’s difficult to persuade myself that it’s worth it.
It is not to argue that this is a permanent situation, because it is not. I simply want to feel a little better about myself before we go for Hawaii, where I’ll be wearing a lot of shorts and swimming suits. I’ll have eaten my weight in mangoes and papayas by the time we return, so it’ll all balance out.
As an alternative to my occasional glass of wine, I chose agua fresca, namely this watermelon agua fresca.
I drink a lot of water on a daily basis, but I need something with taste in it to keep me from feeling like a gigantic water balloon. And because it’s watermelon season (and I have much too much of it since I always assume I’ll eat it faster than I do), it felt like the obvious option.
Is agua fresca good for you?
That kind of depends, since you may prepare agua fresca with a variety of fruits!
If you do not filter or strain your agua fresca after blending it with water, you will maintain all of the fiber inherent in the fruit.
My favorite feature is that agua fresca is very hydrating due to the combination of water and the water content of the fruit itself.
How to make watermelon agua fresca
To prepare this, you just need three items and a blender (affiliate link).
That’s all there is to it.
If your watermelon hasn’t previously been cut into cubes, the longest portion of the procedure will be chopping it up.
Just put the watermelon, coconut water, and lime juice into a blender (aff link), push the mix button, and let it work its magic.
You may be resting with a glass of cool agua fresca in less than a minute, appreciating the knowledge that it has almost half the calories of that glass of wine I’m refusing.
To strain or not to strain
As you pour it into their cups, you’ll get a tiny foamy topping, which is one of my favorite parts.
But, when it sits (which I hope it doesn’t since you’ll be drinking it down), it may separate and you’ll need to give it a good stir.
If it concerns you, you may strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve (aff link) strainer before serving to remove any possible pulp from the watermelon and lime juice.
Straw or no straw?
Add a colorful straw if you’re the sort that appreciates them. There’s nothing wrong with metal straws (I have them), but they’ll destroy the look we’re looking for.
We wanted a vibrant, light, fruity, pleasant drink, not a cold, military, unfeeling glass with confused color schemes.
While I suppose we do want it to be cold, we’re talking about temperature here, not attitude. And, sure, my beverages have personalities. Thank you kindly.
Add a garnish
The drink’s color is already lovely, but who couldn’t use a bit extra zing? For a splash of color and added flavor, garnish the glass with fresh lime wedges.
Are you feeling extra? Garnish with a massive piece of fresh watermelon and see what your guests think. I challenge you.
How long does agua fresca last?
It’s best served right away, but if you’re cooking it ahead of time or preserving leftovers, keep them covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Just be sure to give it a good stir before serving since, as previously said, it will separate somewhat over time.
